How to set up a sustainability plan for your company

Two years ago I wrote a piece about sustainability as a strategy.

Part of this letter was a step-by-step plan for making a company more sustainable. A lot has changed in those two years. Fortunately, sustainability has become an increasingly accepted subject. I was curious about what ChatGPT would yield in response to the question: How do you set up a sustainability plan for your company. See the text below for the result and the comparison with the description from two years ago. It is up to you to assess whether ChatGTP offers added value in this.

Plan of action for making your company more sustainable

Ambition. Formulate your sustainability ambition. Do this together with your employees. My belief is that they would like to put energy into this (intrinsic motivation).

  1. Insight. Create insight into your footprint in your company. Qualify and quantify your CO2 emissions, water consumption and waste flows on a direct and indirect level. One option is to include your chain in the analysis (indirectly). This also increases awareness in your company. After all, your position in the chain also determines where your impact is. The Business Model Canvas is a good tool for this.
  2. Objective. Determine what you are going to make more sustainable. Does this only concern emissions (direct and / or indirect) or do you include the entire spectrum (water, material and raw materials use). Also include current initiatives in your objective. A good example is This initiative combines vitality, sustainability with social involvement (energy bank).
  3. Plan of Action with regard to reduction. Determine the achievable goals and make them SMART.
  4. Do. Translate these into actions over time. Appoint owners in this process (RACI).
  5. Check / act. Measure your progress and make adjustments where necessary. This is certainly sensible in the context of the changing environment in which we find ourselves. Perhaps there are new methods and techniques that you can use or the Law & Regulations have been amended.
  6. Plan of Action with regard to compensation. As a company, you can offset your emissions for those aspects that you cannot reduce yourself.
  7. Check / act. Measure your progress and make adjustments where necessary.
  8. Share your results with your stakeholders (transparency)

Setting up a sustainability plan for your company (ChatGTP 26 June 2023)

Setting up a sustainability plan for your company involves several steps, including the following:

  1. Identify your environmental impact: Start by assessing your company's environmental impact by analyzing your energy consumption, waste generation, and water usage. This analysis will help you identify areas where you can make improvements.
  2. Set goals: Based on your environmental impact assessment, set specific goals for reducing your company's environmental footprint. Your goals should be realistic, measurable, and achievable within a set timeframe.
  3. Develop a strategy: Once you have established your goals, develop a strategy for achieving them. This could include measures such as energy-efficient lighting and equipment, waste reduction, and water conservation.
  4. Engage employees: Your sustainability plan will be more successful if you engage your employees in the process. Encourage employees to participate in sustainable practices and promote a culture of sustainability throughout your company.
  5. Monitor progress: Regularly monitor your progress towards your sustainability goals to ensure that you are on track to achieve them. This will help you identify areas where you need to make adjustments to your strategy.
  6. Report results: Communicate your sustainability achievements to your stakeholders, including customers, employees, and investors. This will help build support for your sustainability efforts and encourage others to adopt similar practices.
  7. Continuously improve: Sustainability is an ongoing process, and there is always room for improvement. Continuously evaluate and refine your sustainability plan to ensure that you are making the most significant impact possible.

By following these steps, you can develop a comprehensive sustainability plan for your company that will help reduce your environmental footprint and build a more sustainable future.

I would still like to invite you to discuss this. Via teams or perhaps while enjoying a nice cup of coffee at WeY Strategie Realisatie.
